TAMPA - Wharton quarterback Andrew Clifford verbally committed to South Carolina on Sunday, while Wildcats teammate Jairus Jones announced he will attend Michigan State.
Clifford was the third-leading passer in Hillsborough County with 2,263 yards and 20 touchdowns during his senior season. He was selected to play in the FACA North vs. South All-Star Game and was a Tribune All-Hillsborough County honorable-mention selection.
South Carolina was the first school to invite Clifford for an official visit. Liberty, Alabama-Birmingham and Nebraska also showed interest.
Jones picked Michigan State after receiving more than a dozen offers. Iowa, Oklahoma State, Indiana, LSU and North Carolina State also were interested.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Jones was Wharton's leading receiver last year with 843 yards. He also led Hillsborough County with 188 tackles, to go with four interceptions. He was selected to the Class 5A all-state first team and the Tribune's All-Hillsborough County first team.
