TAMPA - Firefighters' quick action saved a family's home from disaster after part of an air conditioner caught fire early this morning, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.
At about 12:43 a.m., homeowner Andrea Mason, her 13-year-old son, and their dog heard a smoke alarm and evacuated their house at 1707 N. Gomez Ave., according to a news release.
Firefighters arrived at 12:47 and determined that the fire started in the air conditioner's air handler, spreading into the attic.
Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 15 minutes, according to the news release. They were able to stop the fire from consuming the house. Damage to the house was estimated at $5,000.
