Jennifer Hudson's bravura performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" kicked off Super Bowl XLIII on Sunday.
It was the Academy Award-winning actress and singer's first public performance since her mother, brother and nephew were slain in October.
The recorded musical backing was Disneyesque, but Hudson's rendition was all bombs bursting in air.
Strong throughout, Hudson really took off at "proof through the night," soaring higher and higher until hitting the extra-high note on "land of the free" and finishing off "home of the brave" with a force that rivaled the subsequent flyover by the Thunderbirds.
Did she lip-sync or sing live? What can be said for sure is that Hudson visibly was relieved at song's end.
