The southbound lanes of U.S. 19 in Tarpon Springs were closed for nearly three hours tonight as authorities investigated a crash involving a pedestrian and a sport utility vehicle.
The pedestrian, a 52-year-old man, was taken by medical helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in critical condition, Tarpon Spring police spokeswoman Lt. Barbara Templeton said in a written statement.
His name has not been released because relatives have not been notified.
According to police, this is what happened about 6:30 p.m. at U.S. 19 and Cypress Street, near the Tarpon Lanes Bowling Alley:
A 2006 silver Toyota SUV driven by Genia Davidson, 42, was going south of U.S. 19. The man was walking east and trying to cross the southbound lanes of the highway when he was struck by the Toyota.
U.S. 19 is now reopened.
The investigation is ongoing.
