Krewes Prepare To Party As Pirate Season Invades Tampa

TAMPA - The annual Gasparilla Pirate Invasion and Parade is Saturday and local krewe members will be busy with parties before and after the celebration.

The events include:

• The Krewe of F-Troop Kickoff for Gasparilla Social. The event, open to all krewes, will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Jacksons at Harbour Island.

• The Krewe of Shamrock's Party Like a Pirate All-Krewe Social. The event will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Gaspar's Bar & Grill, 8448 N. 56th St. It includes karaoke and live music.

• The Krewe of Rough Riders' Night Before Gasparilla Invasion Party. It is 6 to 11 p.m. Friday at the Embassy Suites downtown. Dress is Gasparilla festive and krewe casual.

The event includes a buffet from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and live music. Tickets are $35 in advance and reservations are required. Information about ordering tickets is available from Bonnie Stewart, the event coordinator, by e-mailing at bonnistew@aol.com.

• The Krewes of St. Florian, Mustang Sallies and Ryders, Charlotte de Berry and Cigar City will have an all-krewe social at 7 p.m. Friday at Banana Joe's Channelside. The cost is $10 at the door and proceeds benefit Krewes Kare.

• The Krewe of Florian will have its fourth annual Pelota de Fuego at the Tampa Firefighters Museum, 720 Zack St., at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The event includes food, beer, wine and live band. Tickets are $25 at the door with proceeds benefiting the museum.

NCAAP Celebrates 100th Anniversary

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will have its 100th anniversary Monday and activities are planned by the 92-year-old Hillsborough County chapter. They include:

•A WIN Breakfast, sponsored by the Women In NAACP Committee. The event will be from 7 to 9 a.m. Saturday at the Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, 2002 N. Rome Ave. The cost is $10.

The breakfast will be in conjunction with a free health fair from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the same location as well as a legal redress forum 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

•A birthday celebration at the Hip Hop Soda Shop, 1214 E. Fowler Ave from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. Sam Wright is the chairman. The cost is $5 and $3 for students with identification.

•An education forum from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 12 at Middleton High School, 4810 N. 22nd. There is no charge to attend.

•A free rededication service at 4 p.m. Feb. 15 at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 506 Harrison St.

•A Centennial Gala at 6 p.m. Feb. 21 at Higgins Hall, 5225 N. Himes Ave. The $100 fee includes an annual membership in the organization. Pat Spencer is the chairwoman.

Local officers of the organization are Curtis Stokes, president; Carolyn Hepburn Collins, first vice president; Wright, second vice president; Dot Nettles, third vice president; Spencer, secretary; and Doris Garcia, assistant secretary.

Women's Club Plans Valentine Luncheon

BAYSHORE - The South Tampa Christian Women's Club will have a "My Valentine" Luncheon with music and speakers.

The event will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 12 in the Fellowship Hall of the South Tampa Fellowship Church, 5101 Bayshore Blvd.

Debbie McCoy of The Premier Tampa Bead Cafe will demonstrate how to create unique and beautiful accessories; vocalist Deb Johnston will perform; and speaker Jan Johnson will tell how she knew she would grow up to live a fairy-tale life. She will describe how she met a prince and "lived happily ever after."

Musicale Meeting Has Course, Performance

HYDE PARK - The Friday meeting of The Friday Morning Musicale will include a study course The Life of Chopin and music by The Musicologists, comprised of Richard Long, guitarist, and John King, playing the ukulele.

The event, open to the public, will be at 10 a.m. at the Musicale Building, 809 Horatio St.

A luncheon for $5 follows with hostesses Anne Pray, Regina Keppler and Jacqueline Alston. For reservations, call (813 258-4752.

Garden Groups Plan Programs At Meetings

SOUTH Two garden circles will meet at 10 a.m. today and are open to members and prospective members.

•Rose Circle will have a combined circles meeting at the Tampa Garden Club , 2629 Bayshore Blvd. Patti Schaefer, owner of Annie's Garden Shack in Lutz, will speak about growing herbs. For information, call Bobbi Lionetti at (813)281-2133.

•The Amaryllis Garden Circle will meet at the home of Jane Hardin where landscape designer Judy McMullen will present a program on container gardening.

Party Honors Engaged Couple

Jennifer Griffin and Jay Bush were honored recently at an engagement party, given by Jim and Marlene Sacarello.

Griffin is the daughter of Christopher Griffin and Marlene Lazzara Sacarello. She is an emergency room nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital. Jay is from Defuniak Springs and works in Tampa.

About 90 people attended the event, including Jennifer's godfather, Ralph Lazzara III, and other relatives including Carlos and Carol Pazos, Judge Richard Lazzara and his wife, Celeste; and Florence "Cookie" Ginez.
