OCALA, Fla. - Drivers in Florida are being warned to slow down or pay up - speeding fines have been increased as the state tries to close a budget gap.
Driving 10 to 14 mph over the speed limit now costs a minimum of $191; up to 19 mph over the limit is a minimum of $241; and up to 29 mph over the limit is a minimum of $266. Blow through a school zone, and expect to shell out $366.
Other traffic fines have gone up $10. The new fines took effect Sunday. Counties also can add discretionary fees.
Gov. Charlie Crist last week signed into law $2.5 billion in spending cuts, trust fund raids, money shifts and traffic fine increases. The current budget, which runs through June 30, is now down to about $65 billion.
