PLANT CITY - The Durant Cougars, looking to make the state girls basketball playoffs for the first time since 2004, were the No. 3 seed for the District 6A-8 tournament at Plant City High.
Durant played Riverview on Tuesday, and assuming the Cougars won, will have the expected task Friday of having to knock off Sarasota Riverview with a playoff berth at stake.
Results of Tuesday's game at Raider gym were not available at press time.
Plant City entered as the No. 5 seed and was set to play East Bay on Tuesday. The Indians drew the fourth seed although both teams went 5-7 in district play, and split their head-to-head meetings.
Tuesday's winner has a tough task Friday, going up against top seed Sarasota. The Sailors went undefeated in district play.
Durant is on the other side of the bracket and was expected to roll in its Tuesday opener against Riverview, a team the Cougars handily defeated twice. If Durant won, it plays 6 p.m. Friday against the Sarasota Riverview-Lakeland winner.
In all likelihood that means the Cougars will have to knock off No. 2 seed Sarasota Riverview, a team that beat Durant by scores of 50-28 and 56-39 this season.
The Sarasota-Plant City-East Bay winner semifinal is 8 p.m. Friday.
Friday's winners will play for the district championship at the Raider gym at 7 p.m. Saturday. Both finalists qualify for the 6A playoffs, which start Feb. 12.
Plant City entered the district tourney on a winning note, beating Armwood 49-46 on Jan. 26. Tekeyah Clark scored 16 points in that one. Quet Shaw is the Raiders' leading scorer with 15.8 per contest.
Clark, Collisha Walker and Jade Forte all are averaging close to 10 points per game.
Durant entered with its first winning record since the playoff team of five years ago.
