TAMPA - Unemployed executives who once earned six-figure incomes are finding it difficult to find similar high-paying jobs in a tough economy.
With nearly 1 in 10 people out of work in Florida, recruiter Glenn Winograd of Criterion Executive Search of Tampa says trying to find high-paying jobs in the local economy is an even bigger challenge.
"It's a town of a lot of middle-market jobs," he said. "The biggest problem we're seeing is that everybody wants to hire the $40,000, $50,000 $60,000 people. There's still lots of those jobs out there. It's the six-figure people that are having a difficult time."
Winograd suggests checking out Web sites such as TheLadders.com, the professional networking site Linkedin.com and Indeed.com, a job board Web site with more than 1,500 listings in the Tampa area.
Although the Internet is a great tool, Winograd said, it's still about whom you know.
"Less then 10 percent of the people find jobs through the Internet or advertising," he said.
Some tips to consider:
•Be proactive. "Looking for a job is a full-time job, and sending resumes out into cyberspace isn't going to get it done," Winograd said.
•Don't seem desperate. People won't want to hire you today if you make them think that when the economy turns around and the job market improves, you'll leave, Winograd said.
•Find out who the decision-makers are in the hiring process, and contact them directly via e-mail and by phone.
"There are jobs out there. Companies are being very particular, but there are plenty of jobs out there, believe it or not," Winograd said.
