Firefighters with three agencies are trying to contain a brush fire that has burned 40 acres near State Road 640 in Polk County, southwest of Bartow.
No structures are threatened by the blaze, Polk County public safety spokeswoman Heather Smith said.
Fire crews from the Bartow, Ft. Meade and Polk County are at the scene. The fire was reported at 5:03 p.m.
Polk has had at least two other brush fires today. County crews are fighting a small blaze north of Lakeland while other units extinguished a brush fire at Dunson Road and State Road 27 about 4 p.m., Smith said.
Witnesses told authorities a truck with a blown-out tire started the Dunson Road fire. About 25 structures were threatened and 30 firefighters from the Division of Forestry, Polk County and Davenport responded to the scene. No structures were damaged, but several privacy fences were destroyed, Smith said.
Crews remain at Dunson Road checking for hot spots.
Polk is under a burn ban because current weather conditions have left vegetation very dry and brittle, Smith said.
