Former state Rep. Ken Littlefield announced today that he plans to run for Pasco County Commissioner Pat Mulieri's seat next year.

The Wesley Chapel resident filed paperwork with the Pasco County Supervisor of Elections office this morning to run for the District 2 seat in the 2010 election. Mulieri, a longtime commissioner, has not yet announced whether she plans to run for re-election. Both she and Littlefield are Republicans.

Littlefield, 64, was first elected to the Legislature in 1999. In 2006, he opted not to seek another term representing House District 61, which covers parts of Pasco and Hillsborough counties, after then-Gov. Jeb Bush appointed him to the Public Service Commission.

Months later, though, Gov. Charlie Crist announced he would replace Littlefield, not yet confirmed by the state Senate, and Commissioner Isilio Arriaga, whom he said were not consumer-friendly enough.

Currently, Littlefield serves as executive director of the Statewide Advocacy Council, which operates out of the governor's office and investigates reported abuses in mental health and other social service programs operated or funded by the state.

In a statement, Littlefield said he wants to "help create policy that will promote and protect a better quality of life in Pasco County."
