TAMPA - A local hospital blood shortage is prompting a call for certain Tampa Bay area donors.
Florida Blood Services is in critical need of O negative, O positive and A negative blood. Donors with these types are urged to give blood at a Florida Blood Services donor center or Bloodmobile as soon as possible. Locations are available by calling 1-800-68-BLOOD (1-800-682-5663) or going to www.fbsblood.org.
On Tuesday, the blood center imported 180 units from other blood banks but still fell 75 units short of the 0 negative (or universal) blood needed to keep local hospitals stocked, the agency said in a statement.
The blood bank needs approximately 800 donations a day to supply 37 hospitals in Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk counties
Most people ages 16 and older, 110 pounds or heavier and in good health are eligible to donate.
