TAMPA - A blood shortage in local hospitals is prompting a call for certain donors.
Florida Blood Services is in critical need of O negative, O positive and A negative blood. Donors with these types are urged to give blood at a Florida Blood Services donor center or Bloodmobile as soon as possible. Locations are available by calling 1-800-682-5663 or going to www.fbsblood.org.
On Tuesday, the blood center imported 180 units from other blood banks but still fell 75 units short of the O negative blood needed to keep hospitals stocked, the agency said.
The blood bank needs 800 donations a day to supply 37 hospitals in Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk counties.
