In 1960, when Russia's Khrushchev observed John Kennedy's cowardly abandonment of America's promise to provide air cover for the Cuban exile invader force at Bay of Pigs, he perceived Kennedy as spineless and began moving Russian missiles into Cuba. We were brought to the brink of nuclear war.
Today, we again have a young, relatively inexperienced president. It's amazing how history repeats itself.
A week or so ago, North Korea vowed to abandon all peace agreements with South Korea and warned that South Korea's "confrontational policies" may trigger a war on the divided peninsular.
If Obama's response is as weak as his speech on Arab television about American-Muslim relations, we have a high chance of seeing North Korea invade South soon. We have 47,000 troops stationed in South Korea. When the invasion occurs, will we fight or pull out, abandoning our promise to defend South Korea, which we have honored for more than 50 years?
If we pull out, watch for Russia's Putin to place nuclear missiles in Cuba or Venezuela. Korea is Obama's Bay of Pigs.
The world is watching. Let's hope Obama demonstrates more fortitude than Kennedy did in 1960.
