TAMPA - James Harrell wasted no time.

"Our goal is to win the district," he said.

On Thursday afternoon, the co-defensive coordinator on Plant's 2006 and 2008 state title teams was officially introduced as the new football coach at Freedom High.

On Tuesday, the former NFL linebacker confirmed he was offered the head coaching job and was likely to accept it.

Principal Chris Farkas gave Harrell and new offensive coordinator James Jones, formerly at Wharton, a tour of the campus before introducing Harrell to teachers, administrators, and his new team.

Harrell replaces Marquel Blackwell, the former USF coach who was removed from the coaching position in January.

Harrell becomes Freedom's fourth coach in four years. His experience includes being a defensive coordinator at Tampa Catholic and Jesuit, and NFL coaching internships with the Lions, Jaguars and Chiefs.

He played eight seasons in the NFL with the Lions (1979-1986), where he teamed with Jones, a former running back.

"He's got the experience to lead us where we need to go," Farkas said. "His staff will be top-notch."

Harrell seemed eager to take over the program, which has made one postseason appearance since opening in 2002. The Patriots return rising junior quarterback Josh Grady, who threw for 1,815 yards and nine touchdowns last season.

"Josh is going to be an asset to our program," Harrell said. "I just have to maximize his ability."

Freedom went 4-6 in 2008.

"Offensively, we're going to see if we can run a spread offense and take a chance with a running game. Defensively, we'll use multiple fronts, zone blitzes and a Cover 2 shell defense."

Harrell said he will complete the hiring of his staff within the next week.
