A single-car crash in Polk County on Thursday night killed two people. Witnesses told authorities they believed the wrecked car was racing another vehicle moments before it lost control and struck a concrete pole.
Polk sheriff's deputies said the wreck occurred around 11 p.m. on County Road 540-A near Thousand Oaks Drive in Lakeland.
They said the 1992 four-door Honda was westbound at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and veered onto the north shoulder.
The car struck the pole, crushing the right side and throwing the front-seat passenger, 28-year-old Pedro Rivera, of Pinedale Avenue in Lakeland, into the back seat on the driver's side, where Cedrick Green, 29, of Providence Reserve Loop in Lakeland, was seated.
Green and Rivera were pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.
Jason Torres, 23, of John Arthur Way in Lakeland, was identified by the sheriff's office as the driver, but he denied being behind the wheel, deputies said.
Torres was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for facial lacerations and back pain, deputies said. His injuries were not considered life threatening.
No charges were immediately filed, but the investigation continued today, deputies said.
