TAMPA - An electrical malfunction in a ventilation system triggered a fire that caused about $180,000 worth of damage to a house in Ybor Heights this morning, officials said.
No one was injured in the blaze about 4 a.m. at 3608 Devon St., Tampa Fire Rescue said. Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 20 minutes.
Bashir Gray, 31, told firefighters he awoke to find smoke in the house. He and his wife got out safely. Gray told investigators he had removed the battery from the smoke detector because it was chirping; the chirping noise typically indicates a low battery.
Investigators said an electrical malfunction in the attic started the blaze. Gray said the air handler for the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system, which is located in the attic, had been blowing fuses recently.
The Grays are staying with relatives, officials said.
