TAMPA - A pedestrian has died after being struck this morning by a vehicle driven by a Tampa Fire Rescue captain, officials said.
The 46-year-old man died about 11 a.m. at Tampa General Hospital, following the crash about 10:20 a.m., Tampa police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said. She did not have the man's identity because the investigation is continuing.
Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Greg Reed was driving westbound on Gandy Boulevard, heading to his post for the Gasparilla festivities, when the man walked in front of his city vehicle near South MacDill Avenue, Davis said.
"It appears as if he had no time to react," Davis said of Reed.
Reed, 42, has worked for the fire department since 1989, records show. The department is calling in grief counselors for Reed.
