TAMPA - A 36-year-old Tampa man faces charges of armed robbery with a deadly weapon in connection with a robbery reported Saturday afternoon at Yasmin Food Store, 2409 E. Lake Ave., in which a clerk suffered lacerations to the face, head and hands, the Tampa Police Department reported.
Grier B. Matthews of 5119 Par Court was taken into custody after police chased and caught him a short distance from the store, the report stated.
The clerk, Mamadou Diallo of 2409 E. Lake Ave., was listed in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries at Tampa General Hospital.
Police said the suspect approached the counter of the store as if he were going to purchase some food items, and struck the clerk in the head with a chunk of concrete when the clerk opened the cash register.
The suspect took cash from the register and fled on foot, after knocking the clerk to the floor and continuing to beat him with the concrete, police said.
