DAYTONA BEACH - Martin Truex Jr. and sentimental favorite Mark Martin will pace the field in the 51st Daytona 500 on Sunday.
Truex, driving for newly merged Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, captured the second pole of his career with a one-lap speed of 188.001 mph. The 50-year-old Martin, debuting in his new full-time ride with Hendrick Motorsports, went 187.817 mph.
Earnhardt Ganassi had two other cars in the top seven, and locals were part of their efforts. Tampa's Aric Almirola posted the seventh-best speed, and crew chief Brian Pattie of Zephyrhills helped Juan Pablo Montoya to the fourth-fastest speed.
Almirola and Zephyrhills' David Reutimann, who was 18th, have guaranteed starting spots in the 500.
Sunday's qualifying established only the front row for the 500. The rest of the order will be set after Thursday's 150-mile qualifying duels.
