DAYTONA BEACH - David Reutimann and crew chief Brian Pattie of Zephyrhills have built David's dad, Buzzie, an open-wheeled modified race car, and they all will be at East Bay Raceway tonight for its debut.
East Bay "International" Raceway, as Reutimann jokingly called it Sunday, is in the middle of its 17-day Winternationals. Tonight is practice for the 410 sprints and open-wheel modifieds, and there's no NASCAR activity at Daytona.
Buzzie Reutimann, a short-track hall of famer with more than 1,200 feature wins, still runs a part-time racing schedule at age 67.
"Brian did all the fancy stuff on the car," David Reutimann said. "I ended up doing all the stuff that nobody sees, like bumpers and skid rails and stuff, but it's some quality work, I might add."
David said he hung Aaron's decals (for Aaron Rents) on the car, matching those on the No. 00 Toyota he drives for Michael Waltrip Racing in the Sprint Cup Series.
"I'm not exactly sure if it's going to make it through tech, but it's really going to look good until it gets there," he joked.
