TAMPA - Steven H. Smith, the head boys basketball coach at Robinson High School, was arrested Saturday night and charged with driving under the influence.
Smith, who is also a math teacher at the school, was arrested at 11:33 p.m. by Tampa police at 4112 N. Lois Ave., according to the Hillsborough County Jail Web site.
Smith, 41, was charged with driving under the influence with property damage or personal injury and was released on $500 bail.
"There won't be any discipline at the school level because it wasn't school related," said Hillsborough County schools spokeswoman Linda Cobbe. "It's a misdemeanor. He followed the law by notifying his school in 24 hours."
Smith, who is president of the Tampa Bay Basketball Coaches Association, was hired at Robinson in 1998.
Smith, a graduate of Ohio State University, spent two years teaching at a high school in Spring Hill.
Robinson's boys basketball team is scheduled to play Chamberlain on Wednesday in the Class 5A-District 10 tournament quarterfinals. The Knights have a record of 8-14 this season.
Cobbe said Smith will still be able to coach on Wednesday.
Messages left for Smith have yet to be returned.
