If the Ecuadoran judge handling the case follows the recommendations of a court-ordered team of experts, the case could result in the biggest environmental judgment.
•Damages could top Chevron's 2007 profit by 50 percent.
•Court experts are asking the judge to award up to $27 billion in damages.
•The award easily could top the $470 million in damages paid by Union Carbide Corp. over a chemical leak in Bhopal, India, that killed 3,800 people in 1984.
•The case's damages also could exceed the cost of the Exxon Valdez oil spill off Alaska. Exxon Mobil Corp. paid nearly $4 billion in compensation and fines for the 1989 disaster. Exxon settled the civil and criminal charges to stop the litigation.
