Regarding "La Nina Could Make Florida's Drought Worse" (Feb. 6):
Interesting article this early in the year with reference to possible more hurricanes. I've sailed the Caribbean and surrounding areas over 20 years as a master in the Merchant Marines. Seems to me this is nothing else other than weather agencies positioning themselves for money from D.C.
I predict 15 to 18 storms and three to five major hurricanes this year. How I can do that? That's the rough average of the last 20 years or so in any given year. I am now an expert? No. Everybody who paid attention to past years should know that. I wonder where those experts are coming from or whose payrolls they are on. Or is it really only about getting grants in order to run computer programs?
It's more like adjusting already known facts. Of course, hurricanes are dangerous, and Florida will be hit again. But to predict that, I don't have to be an expert, either. Common sense tells me, and it should tell anyone living here to prepare for it.
