TAMPA - On-time performance for the largest airlines in 2008 improved nationally and at Tampa International Airport, which ranked seventh in on-time departures and 13th in on-time arrivals for the year.

The national on-time arrivals rate for the largest 32 airports rose 2.6 percent in 2008 to 76 percent, while Tampa International's on-time arrivals rate improved 1.5 percent to 78 percent, data released by the U.S. Department of Transportation this afternoon showed.

Tampa International posted a 0.25 percent increase in on-time departures, to 81.4 percent.

Arrivals performance in Tampa mostly depends on traffic conditions at the departure airport and en route weather. The DOT regards flights within 15 minutes of schedule as on-time.

Salt Lake City International Airport led the nation's largest 32 airports in both on-time arrivals at 83.5 percent and on-time departures at 86.4 percent.

Chicago's O'Hare International Airport posted the worst departure rate with 68.5 percent of flights leaving on-time. Newark Liberty International Airport was the worst for arrivals with 62.3 percent arriving on-time
