TAMPA - The Tampa Fire Rescue captain whose vehicle hit and killed a pedestrian Saturday wants to express condolences to the family of the man that died, fire officials said today.
A 46-year-old male pedestrian died about 11 a.m. Saturday at Tampa General Hospital, following the incident about 10:20 a.m., Tampa police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said.
The pedestrian's name remains unavailable because his next of kin hasn't been notified.
Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Greg Reed was driving west on Gandy Boulevard, heading to his post for the Gasparilla festivities, when the man walked in front of his city vehicle near South MacDill Avenue, Davis said.
"It appears as if he had no time to react," Davis said of Reed on Saturday.
Reed accepted the type of counseling offered to any Tampa Fire Rescue employee who faces a stressful situation on the job, Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Bill Wade said today.
"Reed is on annual leave, but that had been scheduled some time," Wade said.
A review board discusses any crash involving a Tampa Fire Rescue employee on the job, Wade said. Reed, 42, has worked for the fire department since 1989, records show.
