A Brooksville man is charged with impersonating a law enforcement officer.
Paul Peter Okula, 51, of 12083 Fairway Ave., was taken to Hernando County Jail with a bond set at $2,000.
On Jan. 30, Okula approached a 25-year-old Floral City woman as she sat in her car at the Weeki Wachee Village Plaza at Cortez Boulevard and Commercial Way and claimed he was an undercover police officer, detectives said.
He gestured her to be quiet and tried to open her driver's side car door, but she had locked it, detectives said. The victim then drove off. As she was driving away, she saw the suspect enter a gold 1980s Mercedes in the parking lot.
The woman called the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, which followed up on leads that led them to find the Mercedes and Okula. Okula changed his story several times while talking to deputies, sheriff's office spokeswoman Donna Black said.
