CLEARWATER - Sophomore catcher Jerry Neufang clubbed two home runs and drove in five RBI to power South Florida Community College past Eckerd College by a score of 17-5 on Sunday afternoon.

The win improved the Panthers, who pounded out 22 hits in the romp over the Tritons, to an impressive 7-1 on the season.

"It's early in the season, but we've done some solid things" said SFCC coach Rick Hitt. "We've swung the bats pretty much every game and we've been able to get out to some early leads.

"It's a credit to the guys because they've been working extremely hard and they're playing together as a team."

Sophomore left-hander Cameron Nelson picked up the win with four innings of scoreless relief, while former Sebring High standout Chaz Abeln went 5-for-6 with three RBI and Tom Sicking and Blake Holliday contributed three hits apiece.

"It's good to see the guys swinging the bats well," said Hitt. "We're off to a good start and the guys look like they enjoy playing with each other, which is something I'm glad to see.

"We've done a good job of playing every pitch and every inning and we just need to continue to do that and finish games."

South Florida hits the road for four games beginning Friday with a game against Seminole CC on Friday in Sanford.

The Panthers travel to Jacksonville for two games on Saturday and Sunday and then play at Webber University on Monday.

"We're playing four games in four days," said Hitt. "We've got a few guys banged up, but we want keep working to improve so that we're playing our best ball when the conference games begin in a couple of weeks."
