TAMPA - Ginger, the bottlenose dolphin found stranded Dec. 16 on Siesta Key, was released Monday in her home waters of Sarasota Bay after a complete recovery.
Ginger had been treated at Mote Marine Laboratory's Dolphin and Whale Hospital in Sarasota for pneumonia and gastrointestinal problems since her stranding.
She was under the care of a veterinary team and volunteers who monitored her recovery around the clock.
The dolphin, named Ginger after gingerbread because her stranding came so close to the holidays, ate heartily while in recovery, scarfing down about 4,000 pinfish. That's 35 pinfish at five servings each day.
She is just over 7 feet long and weighs 271 pounds, which is a little less than normal.
Ginger also has been equipped with a tracking device so researchers can monitor her movement.
