Conservatism Not Racism
I read with amazement "Commentator's Rush To Bitterness," (Views, Feb. 8) in which Frank Harris essentially calls Rush Limbaugh a racist because Limbaugh hopes President Barack Obama fails.
As many conservative Republicans feared when Obama was elected, now anyone who dares say something negative about the president is deemed a racist. I guess Limbaugh's comment would have nothing to do with him being ultraconservative and Obama being a complete opposite ultraliberal. Instead, Harris says it must be because of skin color.
Ridiculous! Harris obviously never listened to Limbaugh during the Bill Clinton (who is white) years.

Debt Is Poor Inheritance
As a lifelong registered Democrat, I am appalled at the way this Pelosi- and Reid-controlled Congress is rushing this trillion-plus stimulus/spending bill down taxpayers' throats.
Solomon spoke of "a good man leaving an inheritance to his children's children."
Is this what we want our children's children to inherit? Debt? Tuesday I will change my party affiliation to Republican, so that I can at least sleep at night.

Stimulus Essential
Here are some facts about what the stimulus bill really does:
Creates or saves 3 million to 4 million jobs in the next two years.
Averts hundreds of thousands of teacher layoffs.
Creates hundreds of thousands of green jobs and doubles our clean energy production.
Immediately gives unemployed folks access to affordable health care coverage.
If it doesn't pass, we're in deep trouble.

Stay Home, Obama
President Obama is coming to Fort Myers for a town hall meeting to talk about the high unemployment rate and what his stimulus package is going to do to help the unemployed. I have a suggestion.
Instead of spending over $45,000 per hour to fly to Florida on Air Force One, perhaps Obama should remain in the White House and tend to business.
He could address the people of Fort Myers and the whole United States via television.
But here is a really novel idea: Send a letter to every citizen in Fort Myers and explain what you are going to do for them.
We all must watch our pennies, including President Obama. If this is his idea of common-sense spending, we as a nation are in more trouble than we could ever imagine.

Actor Had Tampa Ties
Tony and Emmy-winning Actor James Whitmore, who died in California Friday at the age of 87 (Sunday's Tribune), had ties to Tampa that we should celebrate. Known by many for his roles in movies like "The Asphalt Jungle," "Planet of the Apes," "The Shawshank Redemption," and for his one-man shows as Harry Truman and Teddy Roosevelt, he also starred in the 1964 film version of "Black Like Me," shot partly on location along Tampa's Central Avenue.
The scene of him walking past Central's grocery stores and nightclubs is a treasured moment in local film history.
