TAMPA - Police today released the identity of a pedestrian killed Saturday after being struck by a vehicle driven by a Tampa Fire Rescue captain, officials said.
Peter G. Ulyanisch, 46, of no confirmed address, died at Tampa General Hospital after the 10:20 a.m. incident, Tampa police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said.
Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Greg Reed was driving westbound on Gandy Boulevard, heading to his post for the Gasparilla festivities, when the man walked in front of his city vehicle near South MacDill Avenue, Davis said.
Reed, 42, has worked for the fire department since 1989, records show.
Reed is away from work this week on a pre-arranged vacation with his family, Fire Chief Dennis Jones said. The department provided him with grief counseling.
"It was tragic," Jones said of the crash. "It really shook him."
