CAPE CORAL - A McDonald's employee who got President Barack Obama's attention at a town hall meeting in Fort Myers says his job prospects were supersized by the spotlight.
The 19-year-old Edison State College student told Obama on Tuesday that he had worked at McDonald's for more than four years because he couldn't find another job. Julio Osegueda asked whether he'd receive better benefits in the economic stimulus bill the Senate passed Tuesday.
The president commended Osegueda for working at a job that "I know doesn't always pay as well as some other jobs."
Osegueda told CBS' "Early Show" today that Obama's sincerity inspired him.
The communications major also said a radio station offered him an internship, and Fort Myers' minor-league baseball team wants him to broadcast its home opener in April.
Osegueda will be the radio analyst during the Fort Myers Miracle game against the Charlotte Stone Crabs on April 10, the team announced in a news release. The Miracle are the Minnesota Twins' farm club in the Class A Florida State League.
"Man this is so cool. I can't believe this day and wow what a great opportunity," the team quoted Osequeda as saying in the news release.
Osegueda is taking basic news reporting classes and claims his work at McDonald's has furthered his passion for broadcasting.
Osegueda claims to not know much about sports, but his family is huge New York Yankees fans.
"I'll be ready," he said in the news release.
The radio job typically pays $25 a day, but the team reportedly says the salary is negotiable.
