Seventeen dogs are safe after a fire broke out in their Land O' Lakes kennel.
A neighbor saw smoke coming from the back of Paw Prince Kennels, 10125 Land O' Lakes Blvd., about 2 a.m. and rushed to help. Buddy Carter called the fire department and then started rescuing the dogs, kennel owner Marc Zuccola said.
Two dogs were taken to a local vet for minor paw burns but are reportedly doing well.
"We're very fortunate," Zuccola said this morning. "We're in the process of contacting the families of the dogs to let them know they're in good shape."
About 30 firefighters came to the scene. One was treated and released at a local hospital for heat exhaustion.
A power surge apparently caused a transformer to blow, sparking the fire, Zuccola said.
The fire caused about $30,000 damage, firefighters say.
