TAMPA - Cities across the country are turning landscapes of concrete, asphalt and glass into bountiful gardens by committing vacant land to urban gardeners for agriculture.
City Councilwoman Mary Mulhern thinks Tampa should be doing the same.
So she has organized a workshop with agricultural experts next week to explore ways that Tampa residents can reconnect with the natural world through urban gardening.
"Community gardens have been springing up in U.S. cities of all sizes in recent years," Mulhern said. "Issues such as food security, high cost of fuel, health and environmental benefits are making the idea of growing food locally attractive and likely to be essential in the near future."
Experts will speak about their experience creating community gardens. Organizations will have the chance to sign up volunteers and provide information on their projects.
The workshop will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Sweetwater Organic Community Farm off West Hillsborough Avenue in Town 'N Country.
