BABSON PARK - The South Florida Community College baseball team showed no mercy in blasting the Webber International University B-team 14-3 on Monday night, and the Panthers were rewarded for their hot start with a top-10 ranking on Tuesday morning.

SFCC is ranked No. 6 in the state after being unranked the first week of the season.

"The ranking is in recognition of the efforts our players have made," said Panther coach Rick Hitt. "It's always nice to have your team recognized, but we're going to keep it in perspective.

"There's a long way to go and we'd like to be a lot better than sixth by the time the season is over."

Another accolade came the Panthers' way on Tuesday, as freshman shortstop Tom Sicking was named the FCCAA Player of the week after hitting .580 with eight straight multi-hit games and five games with three hits or more.

"Toms has had just an unbelievable start to the season," Hitt said. "He is swinging the bat well and the ball looks like a beach ball to him.

"He has done a good job of being aggressive and staying locked in at the plate."

On Monday, Austin Gaines led the Panthers' hit parade by going 4-for-7 with a home run and four RBI, while Cameron Nelson contributed four hits and scored three runs.

SFCC freshman right-hander Matt Fuglesang picked up his second win of the season with five innings of work as the Panthers improved to 8-1 on the season.

SFCC is back in action on Friday with a road game against Seminole CC in Lake Mary.
