TAMPA - The Clearwater firm that designed and built a concrete-and-steel ceiling that collapsed inside a Tampa International Airport garage has agreed to pay for restoring the canopy, officials said this morning.
No one was injured in the collapse of the 50-by-150-foot portion of the canopy that shielded rental cars in an atrium-like area on the ground floor of the long-term garage.
The collapse, which occurred about 2 a.m. Jan. 26, did not compromise the safety of the nine-story garage, airport officials said.
Crews have checked and retrofitted the portion of the canopy that did not fall. The area is used by Hertz rental cars and was not open to the public.
Creative Contractors Inc. and airport officials have yet to determine the cause of the apparent structural failure. Reports are likely next week, airport director Louis Miller said.
Airport officials had no cost estimate for the damage, beyond about $112,000 required for demolition and cleanup. The Creative Contractors official responsible for the project was not available for comment this morning.
