NIGHTS IN RODANTHE **
If the fact this is based on a Nicholas Sparks "novel" doesn't send you screaming for cover, you may enjoy this cliche-spewing adaptation, in which the world seems to be made of equal parts bubble bath and tears. Richard Gere and Diane Lane star as a doctor with a secret and a mom of two with an estranged husband. A convenient hurricane gives them time to bond. PG-13, 97 minutes

Josh Brolin earned good reviews in the title role, and some of the supporting actors are supposed to be uncannily effective. Still, it's hard to imagine who this movie is for. Do liberals want to spend two more hours with the guy they finally got rid of? And what kind of conservative is going to accept Oliver Stone's Oedipal take on the Bush presidency, Part Duh? PG-13, 129 minutes
FROZEN RIVER (not reviewed)
Melissa Leo earned an Oscar nomination for her work as an abandoned wife and mother living near the U.S.-Canada border in this film. When her gambling addict husband disappears with their savings, Leo falls in with Misty Upham, a Mohawk woman in similarly dire straits who involves her in a scheme to smuggle illegal immigrants. R, 97 minutes
