LAND O' LAKES - Seventeen dogs are safe after a fire broke out in their Land O' Lakes kennel early Wednesday .
About 2 a.m., a neighbor saw smoke coming from the back of Paw Prince Kennels, 10125 Land O' Lakes Blvd., and rushed over there to help.
Buddy Carter called the fire department and then started rescuing the dogs, kennel owner Marc Zuccola said.
Two dogs were taken to a local veterinarian for minor paw burns but were said to be doing well.
"We're very fortunate," Zuccola said later Wednesday morning. "We're in the process of contacting the families of the dogs to let them know they're in good shape."
About 30 firefighters went to the scene. One was treated at a local hospital for heat exhaustion and released.
A power surge apparently caused a transformer to blow, sparking the fire, Zuccola said.
The fire caused about $30,000 damage, Pasco County Fire Rescue said.
