CHARLESTON, W.Va. - West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant's rendition of "Country Roads" helped the state become the site for a national conference in 2011.
Tennant planned to play a recording of the song at the recent National Association of Secretaries of State meeting. When the music wouldn't play because of a technical glitch, the former West Virginia University Mountaineer mascot belted out the song herself.
Tennant spokesman Jake Glance says others in the room joined in as she sang.
When the song ended, Glance says the nation's other secretaries of state voted to bring the 2011 annual conference to Charleston rather then Puerto Rico.
It will be the first time West Virginia has hosted the association's annual meeting.
