Haines City police are looking for a man suspected of abducting an 11-year-old child this morning from the gated community of Southern Dunes.

The child was found within a half-hour and within a mile of a rental unit at the resort, Interim Police Chief Sammy Taylor said. He declined to say whether the child is a boy or a girl, citing the ongoing investigation.

The child appears unharmed and was examined at a local hospital, however, Taylor said.

Police responded to the resort about 9 a.m. after the child's parents noticed the child missing. The family is staying in a short-term rental for a few weeks; the child had fallen asleep in the living room the previous evening, Taylor said.

The child was found within a mile of the resort about 30 minutes later at a strip mall, Taylor said. There, the child told police details of an abduction, Taylor said.

Police are looking for a reddish brown four-door vehicle of unknown make or model with a white interior. Police described the driver as a white man of unknown age with shoulder-length light-colored hair, a tattoo of a snake from the wrist to the elbow on his forearm and freckles on his face and arms. At the time of this incident, he was wearing an earring, an ankle bracelet, a white shirt, black pants and black-and-white tennis shoes.

Taylor asked anyone with information about the man to call detectives at (863) 421-3737 or the police department's anonymous tip line at (863) 419-3257.
