More than 500 teachers in Marion County are being laid off as the school district anticipates big cuts in state funding.
That's about 17 percent of teaching positions in the central Florida district.
District officials told 522 educators on Friday they won't have jobs next school year. Some employees who work in support positions will be moved back to the classroom to help make up for the losses.
School district spokesman Kevin Christian said administrators hope the cut is more dramatic than it needs to be, but added: "Based on what we're hearing, we don't think we're too far off."
The district expects to lose $33 million in state funding. The school board's operational budget, which covers teacher salaries, is currently $277 million.
