Meeting Will Discuss Gasparilla Pirate Fest 2009

Published: February 13, 2009

HYDE PARK - An annual meeting to discuss the most recent Gasparilla Pirate Fest is scheduled for March 4.

The session will begin at 6 p.m. at Kate Jackson Community Center, 821 S. Rome Ave. Anyone may attend.

Shannon Edge, director of the office of Neighborhood & Community Relations, said the city hosts the meeting each year as a debriefing and to get a sense of how better to plan for the next year's pirate invasion and parade along Bayshore Boulevard.

During Saturday's Gasparilla Pirate Fest, residents from the Historic Hyde Park Neighborhood Association, Hyde Park Preservation, Bayshore Gardens Neighborhood Association and Channel District documented what they perceived as inappropriate behavior. They hope to present those images at the meeting.

Those residents would like to find a way to curb the prevalence of underage drinking, urinating in public and open sexuality.

Pasco Communities Get A Helping Hand

DADE CITY - County commissioners allotted $50,000 this week for studies aimed at helping revitalize two communities in far northeastern Pasco County.

The money, drawn from unspent federal development funds, would be split between Lacoochee and Trilby. Both communities are north of Dade City, separated by U.S. 301. Both are rural and have seen better days.
Commissioner Ted Schrader, who represents eastern Pasco, requested the funds as a way to begin making good on the county's promise five years ago to improve the quality of life in an area known for its crime. That promise was prompted by the 2003 murder in Lacoochee of Charles "Bo" Harrison, a captain in the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

"The residents up there see no way out," Schrader said. "They see no job possibilities. Until we can bring some opportunities, they just don't see where there are any opportunities to grow."

Singer Cancels Festival Concert

PLANT CITY - Country singer and dancer Julianne Hough has canceled her March 8 concert at the Florida Strawberry Festival.

Hough canceled because of "an unavoidable scheduling change," the festival said. The festival is offering refunds for fans who bought tickets to her show and is searching for a replacement act.

"We're very disappointed, and we know from Julianne's management that she feels bad about letting her fans down," festival General Manager Paul Davis said in an e-mail.

"Both sides worked very hard to get her here, but we just couldn't make the logistics work."

Within two to three days, those seeking refunds for tickets already purchased for the concert will receive refund information by e-mail, letter or telephone, depending on the festival's contact information.

Hough is a two-time winner of "Dancing with the Stars" who left the show to pursue her singing career. Dave Nicholson
