TAMPA - The Clearwater company that designed and built a concrete and steel ceiling that collapsed inside a Tampa International Airport parking garage has agreed to pay for restoring the canopy, officials said Thursday.
No one was injured in the collapse of the 50-by-150-foot portion of the canopy that shielded rental cars in an atriumlike area on the ground floor of the long-term garage.
The collapse, which occurred about 2 a.m. Jan. 26, did not compromise the safety of the nine-story garage, airport officials said.
Crews have checked and retrofitted the portion of the canopy that did not fall. The area is used by Hertz rental cars and is not open to the public.
Creative Contractors Inc. and airport officials have yet to determine the cause of the apparent structural failure. Reports are likely next week, airport director Louis Miller said.
Airport officials had no cost estimate for the damage, beyond about $112,000 required for demolition and cleanup. The Creative Contractors official responsible for the project was not available for comment.
