What was supposed to be a controlled burn in Manatee County turned into an uncontrolled brush fire that has consumed more than 50 acres and threatened two homes, officials said.
The fire, started around 11:30 a.m. on State Route 64 East, three miles west of the Hardee County line, remained out of control as of about 6:30 p.m. Fire officials do not expect to get it contained until sometime Sunday.
A total of 24 units from several Manatee County Fire Districts and the state Division of Forestry are at the scene.
No injuries have been reported so far.
