LAKE MARY - Sophomore Austin Gaines continued his torrid hitting by going 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead South Florida Community College to a 9-4 win over Seminole CC on Friday.
The win improved the Panthers, who are the sixth-ranked team in the state, to 9-1 on the season.
Right-hander Chaz Abeln, a former Sebring standout, earned the win by allowing only two runs in seven innings of work to go along with five strikeouts.
"We didn't get off the bus the first couple of innings," said SFCC coach Rick Hitt. "But we got it going in the sixth inning and took advantage of some mistakes by Seminole.
"Chaz was solid most of the day as we stretched out his pitch total and he was able to get through seven innings."
SFCC played South Carolina Sumter on Saturday in Jacksonville with the results not available at press time."
SFCC SOFTBALL
AVON PARK - The South Florida Community College softball team played fourth-ranked Indian River evenly in Thursday's doubleheader.
But mistakes and errors at critical times cost the Panthers as Indian River swept both games by scores of 4-2, 11-9.
"They were both good ballgames, but we continue to make mistakes and errors," said SFCC coach Carlos Falla. "We're not making as many as before, but we're still making them.
"You can't do that against good teams and come away with a win."
The losses dropped the Panthers record to 6-8 on the season.
SFCC freshman Robbielyn Roberson led the offense with a grand slam and Megan Randolph had a pair of hits.
"We swung the bats well, but we made errors at critical times and Indian River capitalized on them," said Falla. "Indian River also made a couple of ESPN-type defensive plays to keep us from scoring.
"I told the girls to keep their heads up because they played the fourth-ranked team in the state two extremely close games that could have been wins for us if we don't make some of those mistakes."
The Panthers are back in action with a home doubleheader on Tuesday against Central Florida Community College at 5 p.m.
