Woman Pregnant In Prison Blames Death On Bad Care

Published: February 15, 2009

NAPLES - A 22-year-old Bonita Springs woman says her baby died because officials ignored her complaints while she was pregnant in the Collier County jail.

Joan Laurel Small's doctor told the woman on Feb. 3 the child's skull collapsed because she had no amniotic fluid. Small complained for nearly two weeks she was leaking fluid.

She said the autopsy doctor determined the child could possibly have lived if Small received immediate care.

Prison Health Services, a Tennessee company that contracts in Collier County and around the nation, has faced similar allegations. An Idaho jury in November awarded $3.6 million to a former inmate denied proper care while pregnant.

Prison Health Services and the jail say Small saw medical staff about 190 times in 128 days.
