TAMPA - Gasoline prices in the Tampa Bay area continue to climb, despite abundant oil supplies and low oil prices.
Although oil prices remain less than $40 a barrel, the average price of gasoline is creeping closer to $2 a gallon in the Bay area, according to AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report.
Pump prices are rising because weak consumer demand has led refiners to scale back gasoline production, AAA said. What's more, some refineries have shut units to perform seasonal maintenance.
Bay area retailers are charging on average $1.95 for a gallon of regular gasoline, up from $1.80 a month ago. Nationally, motorists are paying on average $1.96 for a gallon of regular fuel, up from $1.83 a month ago.
AAA's daily survey is based on credit card transactions at 100,000 gas stations across the United States.
