TAMPA - Last season, the Chamberlain and Plant softball teams met four times on the diamond. The powerhouse programs split during the regular season and although they lost to Chamberlain in the Class 5A-District 10 tournament championship game, the Panthers upset the Chiefs in the Class 5A state region semifinals.
With revenge on their minds, Chamberlain senior pitcher Alex Hartshorn (2-0) struck out six batters and allowed four hits to lead her Chiefs in a 3-0 shutout victory over Plant Tuesday night.
"We were pumped," Hartshorn said. "We wanted to beat them."
Junior first baseman and USF commit Stephanie Medina went 3-for-4 with a double and RBI while senior and Central Florida-bound senior infielder Marissa Menendez had two hits with a double and one run scored for Chamberlain (2-0, 2-0).
The Chiefs, arguably the top team in Hillsborough County, scored two runs off three hits in the first inning and Angela Kafalas scored on an infield error in the sixth inning. Chamberlain finished the game with eight hits.
"Alex was in charge of the circle and we made plays," Chamberlain coach Bobby Diez said. "She pitched well and (catcher) Kasie (Hatfield) did a good job behind the plat."
"I was hitting my corners cause Kasie was calling (the pitches)," Hartshorn said.
Plant senior pitcher Kayla Suskauer (0-1) had five strikeouts and gave up two earned runs while junior Courtney Croney went 2-for-3 to lead the Panthers (1-1, 1-1).
"I think we did some good things and I think we learned a lot about ourselves," Plant coach Melissa Sigmon said. "They're a team that challenges us and points out the things we've done wrong. It's still a rivalry and they love playing Chamberlain."
WOLVES ROMP BULLS: Newsome sophomore pitcher Bailey Schinella struck out five batters and helped her own cause with two hits and two RBIs to lead the Wolves in a 6-0 victory over Bloomingdale in a Class 5A-District game on Tuesday.
Junior first baseman Ally Ledenham hit a home run and sophomore Chelsey Brooks hit a triple, just two of Newsome's 10 hits on the night.
Schinella and Bloomingdale senior pitcher Kayla Camacho were in a pitching duel before Newsome (3-3) got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning.
