Pinellas sheriff's detectives identified the man who died in a mobile home fire Saturday despite a neighbor's attempt at rescue as Byron Companion, 44.
The neighbor, Christopher Pecora, went into the burning mobile home at lot 52 in the Diston Mobile Home Park and tried to get Companion out of the burning home, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.
Heat and smoke drove Pecora, 39, out before he could rescue Companion who was found in his wheelchair just inside the front door, the sheriff's office said.
Companion's roommate, Gerald C. Jordan, 47, discovered the mobile home engulfed in flames when he returned from the park laundry about 7 a.m. and heard Companion inside calling for help.
The flames were out by the time firefighters arrived.
Investigators said the fire appears to be accidental and started in the living room.
