WaMu Closes 11 Local Branches
TAMPA - Fresh off its acquisition by JPMorgan Chase, Washington Mutual has closed 11 locations in the Tampa Bay area.
The nation's largest savings and loan, WaMu shut the 11 locations on Friday and Saturday after reviewing area locations' profitability, whether they operate out of company-owned or leased buildings and other factors, said JPMorgan Chase spokeswoman Nancy Norris. WaMu still has 28 area locations, she said.
JPMorgan Chase notified employees and customers about the closings a few weeks ago, Norris said. A typical WaMu branch has five to 12 employees, and all of the affected employees were offered jobs at other locations, she said.
Eventually, all WaMu branches will be rebranded as Chase, which acquired WaMu in September.
