St. Petersburg police were investigating Wednesday night how a 6-month-old baby received second-degree burns over 18 percent of her body.
Paramedics with St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue were called to 1018 22nd Ave. S. at 8:37 p.m. and were met at the curb by the baby's grandmother, Monica Compton, fire and rescue spokesman Lt. Joel Granata said.
Paramedic Kris Hollenback, a 12-year veteran of the agency and his partner, Patrick Benson, called for a medical helicopter and began treating the baby, who had burns on her abdomen and upper right thigh, Granata said.
It is unclear how the baby was burned, but it appears to have been an accident, Granata said.
The baby, whose name was not released by authorities, was taken to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition.
